PowerPoint Presentation for Chapter-3-Water Resources(Geography)
Water:
Three-fourth of the earth’s surface is covered with water, but only a small proportion of it accounts for freshwater that can be put to use.
This freshwater is mainly obtained from surface run off and ground water.
Water is a renewable resource.
Water Scarcity
1. Unequal Rainfall – Some areas get a lot of rain, while others get very little.
2. High Population – More people means more demand for water.
3. Overuse of Water – Excessive use in farming, industries, and homes causes shortage.
4. Pollution of Water Sources – Dirty and polluted water is not fit for use.
5. Wastage and Poor Management – Leaks, careless use, and lack of planning lead to water loss.
Need for Water Conservation and Management:
1. To Save Water for Future – Helps ensure water is available for future generations.
2. To Meet Daily Needs – Drinking, cooking, farming, and cleaning all need water.
3. To Avoid Drought and Crisis – Saves us from problems during dry seasons.
4. To Protect the Environment – Conserving water helps rivers, plants, and animals survive.
5. To Support Farming and Industry – Water is essential for growing food and running factories.
Multi-purpose River Projects:
1. Serve Many Purposes – Used for irrigation, electricity, drinking water, flood control, etc.
2. Store and Regulate Water – Dams store water for use during dry times.
3. Help in Development – Support agriculture, industry, and cities.
4. Examples – Bhakra-Nangal, Hirakud, and Sardar Sarovar projects.
5. Issues – Cause displacement of people, affect natural flow and aquatic life.
Integrated Water Resources Management:
1. Combines All Uses of Water – Manages water for farming, industry, and homes together.
2. Protects Natural Resources – Ensures rivers, lakes, and groundwater are not overused or polluted.
3. Involves People and Government – Community and government work together.
4. Uses Traditional and Modern Methods – Mixes local water-saving ways with new technology.
5. Goal – To use water wisely and fairly for everyone’s benefit and for long-term use.
