Answer:- The major types of landforms are:-
The Mountains:- Mountains are the landforms that are much higher than the surrounding landscape.
The Plateaus:- A Plateau is a land from that rises up from the surrounding land and has a more or less flat surface.
The Plains:- Plains are the landforms that have an extensive flat or gently undulating surface.
Significance to life and culture:-
1. Mountain regions has rich flora and fauna.
2. Tourism is often an important source of income for the people living in the mountains.
3. Plateaus have rich mineral deposits.
4. Plateaus are the home to many spectacular waterfalls.
5. Plains in many areas are important for doing agriculture work on a large-scale.
6. Plains have a gentle slopes, river navigation is easy and support a lot of economic activities.
Q2. What are the challenges and opportunities of life associated with each landform?
Answer:- The challenges and opportunities of life associated with each landform are:-

1. The cold weather and heavy snowfall can make everyday life difficult.
2. Steep slopes also pose challenges for construction and infrastructure development.
Opportunities:-
1. Mountains are also vital sources of freshwater.
2. Mountains are the store house of natural beauty with fertile soil.

1. The terrain can be less fertile and dry.
2. One of the main challenges of plateau is outgoing erosion of their surface.
Opportunities:-
1. Plateaus are often rich in mineral resources.
2. They are suitable for livestock grazing and sometimes provide unique ecosystems.

1. Plains can also face challenges such as the risk of flooding , which can damage crops and property.

1. Plains are generally favourable for human habitation.
2. Plains are ideal for growing crops of all kinds.

Q1. These images (Fig. 3.6, Page 50) depict a few challenges that people living in the mountains may face. Discuss in a group in the class and write one paragraph on each. Also discuss, why, despite many such challenges, people still choose to live in the mountains.
Answer:
- At higher altitudes air becomes thinner and the pressure of oxygen decreases. Thus, breathing becomes difficult on mountains.
- On the mountains, weather is very harsh.
- In many places, people depend on mountains for water.
- It can be hard to grow enough food there.
- still people live there, as it is their habitat.
Q2. Use the colour code in Fig.3.8 to add a landform to each name. For instance,’ Tibetan plateau ‘, ‘Rocky range’, ‘Nile plain’. (You don’t have to remember the names in this map.)

- For Tibetan palteau we will use a brown colour.
- For the Rocky range use a light brown colour.
- For a Nile Plain use a mild brown colour.

What does the white expense represent?
Answer:- The white expense represents the snow or ice sleets in the mountains (Himalayan range).

Agra:-
1. It is located on the banks of river Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh.
2. Agra is popular tourist destination as it is the home of one of the seven wonders of
the world, the Taj Mahal.
3. The landform is plain.
4. Near the bank of the river Yamuna, farmers can do the agriculture work.
